Somehow I've managed to stay afloat...
Despite what things have happened this last year. Today is my 30th birthday. Yep... I'm older. Notice I said older and not old. I may have been down this year about turning 30, but I'm sure as hell not out. Watch out for me... The artist is back in full swing.
This year I got my chance to show people that I'm really a designer. Just a shame it's taken 9 yrs from the day I graduated college. The little picture above goes to a competition I just won last week. The theme was water and my shirt got 2nd place. I was told that the cuteness factor won out overall. It's still for sale and it's only $15 a shirt (FREE SHIPPING TOO!) so I ask that everyone who thinks it's adorable to please buy it before they stop making it.

I also created another shirt for St.Patrick's Day. It's paying homage to the Irish Italians everywhere. It says "Garlic & Gaelic" on it and sports a cute garlic and shamrock. It's at a different site, so feel free to buy a shirt, sweatshirt, ceramic tile, jewelry box or anything else I have listed there to buy. It's not the same place as the nessie shirt, so the prices are different. But take a look anyway, maybe something will strike your fancy! The link is in the picture.

Then for this year, I was asked to recreate the LaCrosse Mardi Gras website, make a new theme design, design their buttons, do their billboard and a host of other graphic applications. Talk about feeling on top of the world! Nothing makes your heart feel lighter, than seeing your artwork up on a billboard where everyone can see it! It was all done for free, but I've been told that I did at least $500-$750 worth of work to help the Catholic Schools make this year's turn out better than others. I'll be doing it again next year, so I've already gotten a bunch of ideas for the reveal for 2009 already. If you want to check out the site, just type in WWW.LaCrosseMardiGras.com or click on the button above!
This winter has been pretty busy, thus the reason why I haven't posted a dang thing since October! I have much more up my sleeve. Just wait and see. And I'm doing all of this while still holding onto a fairly worthless job. I'd go into that more, but let's just say that I'm trying to not let my boss get the best of me. Let it be known, I'm looking for a job in Graphic Design or T-Shirt Print Shop. Anyone in the La Crosse area reading this? I'm only an email away.
The key question isn't "What fosters creativity?" But it is why in God's name isn't everyone creative? Where was the human potential lost? How was it crippled? I think therefore a good question might be not why do people create? But why do people not create or innovate? The line is blurred...
no matter how you look at it. I got an interesting email from a forum group I chat with today. Inside was a link to
Breitbart.tv, which has a wide variety of videos from news reports all over the world, and then the radio broadcast interview with
Mike Gallagher, on the
Mike Gallagher Show. This last one struck me and I found myself going off on a small tangent, but I felt it needed repeating. Now mind you, I hold no ill will towards any immigrant who has come over and worked like everyone else to get where they are. And I also have many Mexican or half Mexican friends who are just as upset with this video as I was. And being the great-granddaughter of immigrants (I am 2nd Generation American-Italian on my mother's side), I know that the proper way to make it in the US is to work hard and do so while still abiding by the laws governing America. So please, keep this in mind while reading what I wrote.
Coming from a family of military men and women, I am proud to see that this American Vet stood up for the law. Cheers and kudos to him and his family. I am happy to see someone had the balls to walk up and make a stand.
At the same time, I'm disgusted that the law enforcement did nothing to resolve this issue. Surely that business had been open for a while, which means that the owners had been doing that for quite a while as well. With that being said, action by law enforcement should have happened long before a retired Vet had to make his way down to the shop to remove an illegally flown flag.
To that end, and for those who are crying "Boo Hoo! The immigrants/fence jumpers simply didn't know the law or couldn't speak English!" Just keep this in mind: When your jobs are being taken by them at a lower wage, you are outraged at the injustice, are you not? When they live on SSI and unemployment, and take any benefits the state and federal programs will let them have, on your dime, you feel robbed, do you not? When your child is gunned down by their gangs, you hold them accountable to the fullest extent of the law, do you not?
If they are allowed to take unfair advantage of our benefits, jobs and take the lives of our children, we have a right to hold them to the same laws as everyone else. Frankly I don't care if they know the law or not, they should sit in jail for it just like everyone else.
But then again, that's just my two cents.
Now, there was a person who posted there, elvez1975 if you happen to read through all the posts, who did bring up a good point(s... there were a few). Although he was acting in defense of flag and everything it stands for, he too was in violation of laws and regulations (his points are listed below):
Criminal Trespass? (nev. Rev. Stat. 207.200: “any person who, under circumstances not amounting to a burglary … goes upon the land or into any building of another with intent to vex or annoy the owner or occupant thereof, or to commit any unlawful act.”
Assault? (Nev. Rev. Stat. 200.471: “Assault means intentionally placing another person in reasonable apprehension of immediate bodily harm.”)
Theft? (Nev. Rev. Stat. 205.0832: “a person commits theft if, without lawful authority, he knowingly … [c]ontrols any property of another person with the intent to deprive that person of the property.”)
Drawing a Deadly Weapon in a threatening manner? (Nev. Rev. Stat. 202.320: “a person having, carrying or procuring from another person any dirk, dirk-knife, sword, sword cane, pistol, gun or other deadly weapon, who, in the presence of two or more persons, draws or exhibits any of such deadly weapons in a rude, angry or threatening manner not in necessary self-defense, or who in any manner unlawfully uses that weapon in any fight or quarrel, is guilty of a misdemeanor.”)
Armed Robbery? (Nev. Rev. Stat. 200.380: “Robbery is the unlawful taking of personal property from the person of another, or in his presence, against his will, by means of force or violence or fear of injury, immediate or future, to his person or property, or the person or property of a member of his family, or of anyone in his company at the time of the robbery. A taking is by means of force or fear if force or fear is used to: (a) Obtain or retain possession of the property; or (b) Prevent or overcome resistance to the taking. … The degree of force used is immaterial if it is used to compel acquiescence to the taking of or escaping with the property.”)
You are free to take whatever political stand you want on this. That’s the beauty of America. What would your reaction be if someone of Mexican heritage came on your property, took down your flag and threw it on the ground, all while brandishing a 6 inch knife?
You want to change the world? Stand outside the store and protest. Demand that the city or federal officials to somehow enforce a law with no penalty. Try talking to the store owner. But vigilantism and intimidation should not be part of the equation.
His point is well made, and yes, if this had been in Boston and the Irish and USA flags had been switched, it's quite possible, the owner would have been informed, possibly reprimanded or even ticketed. But I could see something similar happening in NYC with an Middle Eastern flag poised above our Old Glory. And instead of a quiet visit from a black and white team, a downpour of officers and multiple backup would be waiting for someone to come out brandishing weaponry. I don't think it's because we necessarily hate the group or country, that causes this. It's because we've seen a blatant disregard for American heritage being embraced by certain groups within this country. Yes we are a melting pot, but I am reminded by something my brother sent to me recently:
Non-reciprocal principle: If you add a cup of wine to a barrel of sewage, you get a barrel of sewage. If you add a cup of sewage to a barrel of wine, you get a barrel of sewage.
Simply put, if you continue to allow those who ruin the country to get away with such things, it only gives us a huge black eye. Any other country looking at us from their outside vantage point already think we are a joke: "America: The Melting Pot" "America: The Land of Opportunity". The problem is, too many people come into America's 'Melting Pot' expecting large quantities of 'opportunity' without working for it. (I find an image of politicians in China, Japan, Brittan, and a host of others nodding their heads encouragingly. Only to then find out as soon as our back is turned, they are pointing and laughing franticly at us.)
GAH!!! I ramble too much when it comes to politics (which is why you very seldom find such posts on my page) but I felt I needed to clarify my post I made in reference to my comment there. I hate seeing prejudice, and unfortunately, in my area, Hmong residents seem to get it the worst. I know quite a few Hmong (and even have a household full of them living as my neighbors) and not all are the terrible people others in the community refer to them as. The problem is that one bad apple can ruin the bunch. It
IS how stereotypes are formed in the first place, are they not?

I decided that today, on one of the nicest nights of the summer so far, I'd spend some creative time and make a poster for Pandora, an online music broadcasting company. They have this competition to create a poster that promotes charities which raise money for the arts and help build the future of music and our children. So after about 12 hours, I finished and posted it on
Votigo.com. Please vote for me and get me into the top 40 please!!!

The greatest thing about today was the cool relaxing weather. It's been in the mid 70's the last few days and tonight Greg decided to take me to the fair for a nice little bit of dinner and to see the 4-H projects and our friends who own the feinting goats. We didn't have to judge them this year, but we had fun visiting them, nonetheless. We even got to have Greg's mini donuts before a little sprinkle cleared out some of the fairgrounds. All in all, it was a wonderful night. I can't believe that we found such a wonderful evening to relax and have some fun.

It's been so long...
Does anyone come here anymore? Did ANYONE miss me??? Probably not. My page is one in a billion other blog pages in the world. Who would miss mine? All is not lost though. Regardless of there being no audience to read what I have to say, I must still say it somewhere, or else my brain will weigh ever so heavy with the thoughts that plague my mind. So now I'm back. Yes, for those of you who DID possibly miss me (more of the fact, you were HAPPY I was gone) I'll shed some light on the life I'm dealing with, presently with a bit of background added in to cover the gaping hole of 5 months.
December:
Eric had gone and come back on his trip, just as Greg and I decided we'd go and visit Josh and Missy. Oh what a fun weekend. Busy as ever when with the two of them, I was happy to be there. Something different for a change. We had so much fun, and I can't wait to do it again.
January:
We celebrated two birthdays here in the house. Greg's was great. Lots of new stuff for him, including the completion of his degree out of the way. I wish I could have said that it was going to be simple for him from now on, but it was still a bit rough. His dad got on his case about the fact that he'd be looking for a new job soon. I'm sorry if I agree with Greg on this one. He didn't need to be in a dead end job with no benefits or possibility to make more than he was. Unfortunately for him, he was still working weekends at Pizza Hut and working for the shop. He was getting really burned out, splitting himself between two jobs.
Eric's birthday was at the end of the month and his was very mellow. He used some of the money he had gotten from his parents to buy pizza one day. Unfortunately, Greg doesn't like that company's food. He was also upset about the fact that he was hearing the two of us rip on our jobs and those there, when we work less hours then he did in a week. I had tried for months to get more hours, and to up my status in the store. I hated the demeaning attitudes the store had towards its personel. I thought when Nick was in charge, we'd have it all... then he left for a better job with better benefits to take care of the family they were starting. We got the new GM and we were sure the store would go straight to hell.
February:
February was so short, I nearly missed its existance. Not a whole lot had changed with this new GM of ours. She seemed less of an airhead than Jean but not nearly as savvy as Nick was. God, I've been through 4 GM's in that store... that's really pathetic. I remember her coming in and rearranging everything in the back room. It didn't work. It still doesn't... I saw forshadowing in this. I wasn't quite sure what to think of a GM that actually went to the owner and told him to fire her.
March:
My birthday was in March. It was really quiet for a celebration. Missy drove down and stayed with us while Josh was stuck in a convention. We let her putz around in her PJ's here for as much as she wanted (one of her favorite things to do on the weekends from what we found out)I just wanted something simple with my REAL friends. Last year's party was great but I hated the fact that the girls from work who were under age decided it would be great to try and drink in the hotel room, or the one guy from work who thought it great to bring his kids along when they didn't even know Greg or me. It was quiet and simple. I got a new monitor for my computer and now I have 2 monitors on my desk for gaming purposes.
April:
This was a big month. Greg got a new job in his field. I was so happy for him, I wanted to cry. I'd tell you the place but it's not really supposed to be talked about so I will not do so. We had to go get him some new clothes (old shirts and jeans from the shop simply would no longer do for this nice place). So now I can say with pride, my hubby cleans up really good. He's quite the looker in a good pair of dress slacks and button shirt. He's really come into his own. I only see wonderful things happening for him from now on. Now all we need to do is see if he is ready to terminate his part time position at Pizza Hut.
AH yes, Pizza Hut. I had nearly forgotten. In the last two months, I had been working with the new GM to see about getting more hours and possibly more responsibiliy. She started my training as a manager and I had been managing a couple nights on my own with no problems what so ever.
May:
Well... If there is anything I have learned from working in a franchise restaurant, it's know who is kissing who's ass to have a better standing in the business. I made a grave mistake one night. On a very busy night, with a waitress that was very irritated that her last night there was nothing but terrible (having to train on one of the busiest nights of the week as well as sucky tips because of it) she had joked, in front of the GM, that she was going to get a beer from the back that night. I joked along with her. It was considerably difficult night for a rush, and things were backed up and tense with a new waiter, and the regular rabble from the cooks in the kitchen. I played along with the joke most of the night. She said she was going to get a beer after the GM left, and I said something along the lines of "you best use a paper cup so I don't see anything" (we all have to use paper cups for our drinks in the store. Health Dept. Regulation) The night went on fine, and I even sat next to her at one point when the crowds died off. She was rolling silverware, and I was doing some coupon paperwork. Greg even stopped in to say hello and see how things were going. I never once noticed her consuming alcohol. She had a cup, just like the rest of us, but I never noticed anything out of the ordinary. Then again, I never thought to stop and investigate her cup. She did all of her work, better than most do, and she was done early to boot. She and the closing cook left together.
One of the drivers that was there that night must have known something I did not, and the next day told Neil (a manager who has been trying to get me fired) what I let happen that night. Now, the rest of this little section is hear-say only because of the fact that no one will give me a straight answer, but this is how I feel the next part played out.
Neil that next night, cornered a second driver who was there earlier in the evening and asked him if I let this happen. He said no. Neil, not satisfied, twisted his conversation around and, instead of talking to the GM, went over her head to the Regional Manager and told her that the second driver had informed him that I allowed this situation to happen. The next thing I knew, I was being cornered by the GM about what was told to her by the RM. I was floored. I thought it was all a joke.
The waitress was over 21, that wasn't the issue here, it was the fact she was drinking while working. And I didn't stop it. Because there was no physical proof only hearsay, and the waitress's last night was that night I worked with her, they made me the scapegoat. This was just what Neil had been looking for. A way to get me fired. He had been trying for months to get Eric, Mike D and I all fired for a host of different things. I was always careful to double check myself. I don't know why I didn't that night. Perhaps I was trying to make the night go smoother. It was already a chaotic night in the store, I didn't want to make it more difficult by getting on people's butt about infintesmal cleaning chores.
Because of Neil's decision to go over the GM's head, the RM flipped out and demanded I be fired. The GM tried to reassure me that this wasn't the case, that she would try to contact everyone who was there that evening to see what she could find out. The thing that bothers me most, is when I was actually fired (a week later, I may add), I contacted the waitress who was supposedly drinking, the driver who was their earlier in the evening, the 2nd closing driver, and the closing cook. None of them had been pulled aside and asked about the situation. This means that my firing was wholly dependant on one driver's account of the evening, and a manager who wasn't even there that night who manipulated the information in the first place.
I've head less pain in my back since that night. I've had no compelling reason to rush in to see if the place has gone up in flames without me. I had no illusions that Pizza Hut would fail without me. I told the GM though, when she fired me, that she made a huge mistake, and that mistake was believing someone whom she had even made a point of saying how he needed to be fired from the store. That he was acting like he was in charge and he didn't have to listen to her. Let Neil have his own way... it'll more than likely come back to bite him in the butt sooner or later.
I'll have you know I smiled when I walked out of that store. I am not sad that I'm not there any longer. I'll miss people, sure, everyone does at a job. But I'm not sad. In fact, the weight lifted off me was ten times better when I saw that about a half an hour later, Eric showed up back at the house. He was supposed to close the kitchen that night. He walked on them. He went to the GM and quit on the spot when he found out that they fired me. They thought they were so sure that he'd still stay, they scheduled him for 5 close shifts that week. I hope they had fun covering his shifts, mine, and the 2 shifts I saw that were already missing from the schedule that needed to be filled.
In other, more happy and exciting news, I want to make a point of congratulating Greg on officially graduating from college. He graduated with High Honors and he's in a job he loves doing exactly what he went to school for (and this is what he wants to do, not just for the money). I have never been so proud of him as I was when I saw him walk across the stage. Having Josh and Missy here to share in the celebration was wonderful as well, even though it was short. And it was great to see both Chad and Chris here to spend the weekend with him on his day. You looked great honey, I just want you to always know that.
*_*_*_*
So that's what's happened. Yes, the majority of the information was about May, but that is also more fresh in my mind than anything else. Perhaps this was a sign. Greg has now finished everything and has turned a new leaf in his life by working for a new employer. My mom recently did the same for this school year with a school an hour away. Far less drama for her than she was dealing with before. Now it must be my time. I'm fairly sure I am more than up to the challenge.

Lets see....
what happened yesterday? Have I ever mentioned, I HATE the airlines? Read below and you'll understand.
Thursday Dec. 21, 2006:
1:30pm: I leave work to make sure Eric was ready for the airport.
2:00pm: Greg comes home from class and insists he should join the mini-trip to the airport.
2:46pm: Eric checks in an hour before his flight is to board. We are alerted that it's behind by a half an hour.
2:47pm: Some passengers are instructed that they should take the charter bus to Minnesota so they can get to their connecting flight. Eric has been told his flight will be here in time to get to his connecting flight so he stays.
2:50pm: Charter bus leaves. *Wave to charter bus... lucky bastards*
2:51pm: All three of us head to the bar for some munchies and a drink, disillusioned by the comforting words of the ticket master.
3:45pm: Flight still delayed. We continue to sit in the bar, overlooking the tarmac. We discuss the fact that Greg is now done with school and Eric talks about his adventures in college in Florida.
4:00pm: Still delayed.
4:30pm: Still delayed. Ok... This is crazy. Food's done. Damn drinks cost too damn much.
5:00pm: Still delayed. Eric goes to check on the status of the flight.
5:05pm: Eric comes back, checked bag in tow. Based on info provided by the comforting ticket master, the flight wasn't due in til 7pm. His connecting flight to Tennessee was to leave Minnesota at 7pm. So that was a no go. He got a new itinerary and we went home.
5:15pm: Went and did more Xmas shopping. I WAS going to do this alone... but instead I had 2 guys in tow.
7:00pm: Came home with only 2 gifts because the guys wanted to be at home. After discussing with Eric, his new first flight was to leave at 8:20am on the following day, today (December 22, 2006).
7:30pm: I forced the guys to eat leftover pizza from the night before as dinner. I'm so wired I can't sleep. Greg, Eric and I all decide to play WoW for a while.
Friday December 22, 2006:
12:00am: Eric wins Tier 2 helm from Onyxia in WoW. (that IS a big deal) It makes his day so he decides to go on more runs with his group. This becomes the highlight of the last 24 hours.
1:00am: I decide I want to take a shower. Maybe that will make me tired enough to get a couple hours of sleep. The guys are still on WoW.
1:30am: Greg decides to go to sleep because he has to work at 8am. I'm still wired after my shower. And yes, my showers do go for approximately a half hour. I like it that way and I really don't care what others think. XP
2:00am: Time and I convince Jamey to go on a run to Molten Core to try and get items. He begrudgingly goes. I end up going back to Ironforge to sit around and not do quests.
3:00am: I get bored of WoW for the evening. I'm getting tired. So I go to watch Eric and Jamey in MC by watching Eric play in his room.
3:05am-ish: I fall asleep on Eric's bed while watching... and for every hour after that, it felt like he tried to wake me up.
6:30am: Get up from Eric's room and go get changed to do this ALL over again.
7:00am: Out the door with Eric to the airport... again. Greg got to sleep in... the lucky bastard.
7:02am: Got McD's breakfast because dammit, I was hungry.
7:05am: Back at the airport.
7:45am: Eric checks in... again.
7:50am: Eric actually gets in the line to be scanned.
8:00am: He hugs me goodbye (which starts to make me cry... but I'm strong, right?) and starts pulling out items for scanning.
8:03am: He waits on the other side of the glass for boarding to begin. I wait to make sure he's actually going.
8:10am: He comes over to the window and says goodbye again to me and then... Eric tells me I'm pretty which makes me cry *damn you*.
8:15am: Eric boards the plane.
8:20am: Doesn't leave yet because some family is putzing around with their shoes.
8:30am: Crew removes the wheel chocks.
8:35am: Plane finally taxis to position.
8:45am: Plane (with Eric) actually takes off. (25 mins late. But better than yesterday. At least he is ON the plane this time)
9:50am: Eric called to let me know he made it to Minnesota for the first part of his flight (he now has to go to Detroit, and finally from Detroit to Knoxville, Tennessee)
12:00am: No call. Surely he has to be on a plane. Somewhere.
12:05am-ish: I fell asleep somewhere in there on the couch.
2:50pm: Eric calls. He tells me they finally pulled into Knoxville. WTF? What happened to Detroit? They only allotted him 15 mins between flights and had to run almost the full length of the airport to get to the connecting flight. So he was unable to call me before he left for Tennessee.
So now he's in Tennessee, celebrating Christmas with his family for the first time in their new place since they moved from Pennsylvania. He gets to see his puppies and witchy cat as well as see where his mom works:
Dixie Stampede. I'm happy for him... He should have a blast for the next 6 days.
I ended up with the 2 shittiest work weeks ever. I hate Steph... and Neil. (He hadn't really done anything in particular today, but I just wanted to reiterate the fact that I don't like him.)I best go... I want to watch House.

There comes a time...
When someone must leave.
I just wish that it hadn't been today. Fuji has been having eating problems for some time now and it had gotten worse where he was having problems remembering where the catbox was. Cleaning up after him was something we had kept on top of as much as possible and shooed the other two cats away when it was time for him to eat so he could have his fill. He was consistantly getting thinner and having more problems. Today though, he went to the first place he went to hide when he came to our house: the basement. He hid there all day and when Greg came home in the afternoon, he noticed Fuji didn't come for food. He was in the basement not wanting to move and looking quite weak. Before I left from work, he told me what he had noticed and asked me to check in on him when I got home. Somewhere, in those 2 hours, he passed away. I feel terrible that I wasn't able to hold him and comfort him but had to be at work instead. I am still crying as I write this due to the fact I feel like I abandoned him even when I know there was nothing I could do.
He was a wonderful cat to have in the house even if he was a transplant from our friends' home. His time with us may have been short, but we felt like he was ours from the first day he came into the house. He regularly sat with Greg at his computer, either curled up in his lap or hogging the back part of his computer chair. He regularly slept on the catbed on the desk and was right there with the other 2 cats when it came to feeding time. He spent time with me as well in my computer chair curled in my lap when I had my feet up and laid with me on the couch from time to time.
We are going to bury him up on Greg's family's farmland tonight next to where they buried his childhood dog and the niece and nephews' dogs and cat.

Happy Halloween...
All you gamers, bloggers, and MySpacers out there!
Halloween was ok... I felt sort of odd going to the bar this year in costume. I don't know what it was but maybe it was because I didn't like what I was going as. I always want to wear something original but can never seem to get the idea together in time. Next year, I swear, I'll have an original costume. Missy and Josh came up for the weekend and it felt as if I was always in a rush. We go here, we go there... and the whole time is spent trying to find a million deals for Josh to resell on eBay. Perhaps when he comes back in 2 weeks it won't feel as chaotic. (although, Missy won't be here to mellow out the ADHD mentality of that boy) XD
It's getting colder, which means I'm back to sweaters and sweatshirts which are more to my liking. Pretty soon it'll snow and in fact there have been whispers of that very thing happening this week sometime... perhaps the weekend or just after. I'm not looking forward to snow nor the crappy drivers that frequent the streets of this city. It's pretty and all... but I don't like it any more than before.
Well kids are at the door for Halloween treats, so I best be going.
